The simulation of the seams of stockings
Immediately after the beginning of World War II, nylon stockings disappeared from the shelves. In 1941, the United Kingdom imposed restrictions on supplies for the civilian population, to satisfy the need for material and valuable resources for the troops. The United States followed this example in the same year. Nylon was the first material, which was limited.
The military propaganda machine urged that women dress beautifully. “Make Do and Mend” became the slogan of the time. When repairing old stockings have failed, women painted dark stripes on the legs to simulate the seams of stockings.
