In 1932, the ruthless communist leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin, engineered a man-made famine in an attempt to spread his communist control to the Ukraine.
By starving the Ukrainians, Stalin planned to take control of the Ukrainian farmland. He began to systematically deport the Ukrainian farmers to Siberia where they suffered in concentration camps. Anyone who was caught stealing food from the fields was executed.
Millions of people were simply left to needlessly starve to death in Stalin’s ruthless efforts to expand his control.
